Eight booked for
demanding dowry

VASCO, OCT 29 – Vasco police on Monday booked eight members of a family from
Vasco on charges of demanding dowry from a handicapped woman, besides
threatening to kill her.

According to Vasco Police, Vandana Madhukar Mandrekar (30) had married one
Harishchandra alias Dinesh Naik four months ago.

Before entering into wedlock, Vandana had clear stated to Harishchandra that
she was handicapped, did not have high educational qualifications and that, her
family struggled to make ends meet.

Harishchandra allegedly assured Vandana that he and his family had no problem
with her status and informed Vandana that he had divorce her earlier wife and
he want to marry Vandana without any dowry.

But within four months of marriage, Harishchandra and his family allegedly
began demanding dowry of Rs 1 lakh and a car. They were accused of passed
derogatory remarks over her disability, financial statues and insufficient
dowry. 

On October 12, Harishchandra and his family members dragged Vandana from her
residence in Vasco and forcefully took her to her cousin’s place at Bastora. 

Claiming to have political and police contacts, Harishchandra threatened to
burn her alive if she were to return to Vasco.

Vandana tried to return to her husband’s house, but he refused to accept her
and his family members tried to snatch her ‘Mangal Sutra’. 

Vasco police has booked accused Harishchandra under Sections 493, 494, 495, 498 
A, and 506(II) of IPC
while his family members have been charged under Sections 498 A and 506(II) of 
IPC. PSI
Sanjay Dalvi is investigating the case under the supervision of PI Sammy
Tavares.
