Dear Joe, I usually don't have time to follow all your interesting and informative links but tonight, after an inspiring GNAT meeting, I decided to look them up.
Your first photo brought back childhood memories of trips to the Saligao fountain with 'Paathew' (Fr. Ernest Saldanha, Don Bosco's Panjim) where we would catch a few of those tiny fish by kicking a shoal onto the sloping bank of the pond and grab the unfortunate slippery fish before the got away. We would take the home in a jar and transfer them to an aquarium that my Dad has built. http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=1812135555&size=l Your second photo brought back even more vivid memories of shopping at the Mapusa market with my father. He seemed to know every type of fish, how to check it's freshness and bargain for the best price based on availability, time of day and a myriad of other factors only he knew influenced the price of fish and the vendor's willingness to 'make a deal'. http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=325052381&size=o Recent reading on evolution and our piscine ancestry has caused me to develop a healthy respect for these watery wonders and hope that we have not damaged their stocks beyond recovery. One of my favourite sources of information, the National Geographic Magazine, recently had a cover story on this topic http://www7.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0704/feature1/ After my conversion to vegetarianism 6 years ago, my Dad was disappointed that I would no longer partake of his seafood delights but wholeheartedly delved into the wonderful world of vegetables, not wanting to let his culinary skills to go waste. Although I would not be able to name all the vegetables in your picture, I probably have tasted them all, more than once. http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=250914886&size=l But it was your last link ( http://tinyurl.com/2qoy5k ) and comment (Why go to devil when you can go to God?) that prompted me to start writing this message. Mental health and it's accompanying deviations are only now being understood. In the past, the demons that caused unstable individuals to take their own life were put into a religious context. Today, as we learn more about how our brains function, entire disciplines have concentrated their efforts on revealing the intricacies of the trillions of neuronal connections in the few pounds of grey matter delicately balanced atop our necks. http://magma.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/2007-11/memory/foer-text.html Scientific American, a popular mainstream publication that brings information from the scientific community to the public has started publishing a separate quarterly issue called Scientific American - Mind http://www.sciammind.com/ My sincere hope is that more people will start understanding the cause of deviant behaviour from a physiological perspective and concentrate their efforts to exorcising those devils in a more successful and compassionate way.
