BICHOLIM NOV 16: Trouble that erupted at Navelim (Bicholim) when an irate
mob of about 400 villagers from Amona, Kudnem, Navelim and Pissurlem
blocked the road on Tuesday, to protest against the pollution by
mining companies in the area continued for the fourth day today even
as the officials
failed to break the deadlock.
The agitating residents, who blocked mining traffic since 10.30 am,
have decided to continue their agitation on Wednesday, even as
Bicholim Deputy Collector Arvind Bugde has convened a meeting on
Thursday to resolve the problem.
Bugde sought to persuade the protesters by stating that he would
forward their grievances to the appropriate authorities.
It may be recalled that Amona Bachao Samiti (ABS) along with the
Panchakruti Nagrik Samiti submitted a memorandum to the mining
companies in the area, demanding certain facilities and benefits.
A permanent solution to the unemployment problem, compensation for the
loss of agriculture, supply of hygienic water and remedial measures to
control pollution were some of the demands in the memorandum.
