Hi Mario,

You had an excellent post. After reading it, I thought I could skip my Sunday
obligations or at least the sermaum. I do not have any issue with your points.
Yet, to piggy on them, I think to elevate Goanet posts, there should be "full
disclosure".

Let me give a small example from which we-all could learn. While in California,
I visited my granddaughter's school for a social event. Sitting next to a San
Franciscan, to make small talk, I asked his opinion on his representative Nancy
Pelosi, the speaker of the House of Representatives. He said, "I do not have a
high opinion of her". And in the next sentence added, "Yet, I have to tell
you, I am a strong Republican". We moved on to talk about the Republican
candidates running for president.

The take-home message: Should not there be a full-disclosure from individuals
who write a controversial opinion / topic? Kudos to Santosh, Kevin and Selma
for voluntarily telling us their personal stand on their befiefs. I do not
agree with their stand, but I salute them for coming clean with a full
disclosure. I think others, should also have the decency to do the same in one
or two lines. e.g. strong beliefs, 'outstanding' Catholic, once a week or once
a year visit to church / temple.

For the benefit of our non-Catholic friends, an 'outstanding' Catholic is one
who stands outside the church during the religious rituals.:=))

Now that I have introduced the term "cognitive dissonance", perhaps individuals
(on this very wide forum, with different backgrounds) should also tell us if
they have "cognitive dissonance" with the controversial issue they discuss.
Before we throw the stone at someone else, let's be honest about our own selves.

>From Wikipedia:
Cognitive dissonance is a psychological term describing the uncomfortable
tension that may result from having two conflicting thoughts at the same time,
or from engaging in behavior that conflicts with one's beliefs.

Kind Regards, GL

Why do otherwise intelligent adults still think they can disprove the existence
of a supernatural being when some of the most eminent atheist and agnostic
scholars in history have opined after much reflection that there is no way to
honestly disprove this?

While Gilbert and Santosh, regardless of the merits of their individual facts
and opinions, are honestly and seriously engaged in their debate on God,
Christianity, etc., we here see George Pinto, who as a teacher should know
better, engage in scurrilous verbal hit and run tactics, confusing hubris and
ridicule for intelligent commentary, the assumption being that whatever HIS
opinion is is the superior one so he can make fun of those who disagree with
him without seriously addressing their facts and opinions.
