Very sad to hear this news. I've known James since high school days. He was a
couple of years senior to me at Loyola High in Margao.

He was a good looking blue eyed boy (a rarity among Goans) and was very popular
at school. But he shot to prominence with his excellent skills on the drums. He
leaves behind his wife Vera - a fine ballroom dancer, two young kids, his
mother and siblings.

For a brief time the family lived in my village at Per-Seraulim/Colva, during
which time, I took a few dance classes with them. Always smiling, James was a
real gentleman - we shall miss him dearly.

Death due to vehicular accidents, is an all too familiar occurence on Goan
roads. The stretch of road where James died, between Mungul in Margao and
Seraulim pond, is a lousy section of road. If you fall off the road, you end up
in the body of water, which is an extension of the Seraulim pond. Since olden
days, the water in the pond is retained with sluice gates at this time of the
year, to help local farmers grow second season crops. I do not believe anybody
uses that water anymore to grow any crops. Most likely, the locals use it to
catch fish (Pintoll) around March/April when they drain the water.

It seems, another young man, also from Seraulim, died in another road accident
just a day after James. It's sad to see so many young people dying on Goan
roads. I believe it is time, they gave classes in Goan schools in defensive
driving and traffic safety.
