Vajpayee and RSS biggies back BJP’s decision
AHMEDABAD: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has finally resolved its
leadership dilemma.
The party’s supreme decision-making body, the parliamentary board, has
decided that Lal Krishna Advani, 80, leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha,
will be the party’s prime ministerial candidate in the next general elections.
“The Lok Sabha elections are not far off now. The parliamentary board decided
unanimously that Advaniji will lead the party in the next elections,” party
president Rajnath Singh announced at a press conference. The board meeting was
attended by Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and other senior leaders.
The party’s ideological mentor, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has
already okayed the candidature of Advani. Singh said former Prime Minister Atal
Behari Vajpayee had also given his consent.
“We met Vajpayeeji. He said because of health reasons, he cannot participate
in active politics. So, it is better that Advani leads.”
Advani thanked the party, Rajnath Singh and “particularly Atal Bihari
Vajpayee, under whose leadership I have worked for a long time”.
The timing of the party’s decision, coming as it does on the eve of the first
phase of polling in Gujarat, is politically significant. Advani represents
Gandhinagar in the Lok Sabha and will be there to vote on December 16.
While the move may not have any major impact on voters in Gujarat, it has
immense significance for the internal structure of the main opposition party.
