Hi Selma
Many thanks for your interesting observations re the marriage market with
girls/women now having a lot more education and power at the elbow than many
males.

I have invariably found your responses ever so insightful. They often fill
many gaps within my own limited knowledge. Please note that the issue of caste
interests me greatly and particularly provokes the radical in me but that it is
not my speciality as an academic discipline.
  Regards
  Cornel
PS I forgot to say in the long article to Gabe that a bloke (and his mum!)
who bring(s) caste into the picture with a young Goan girl today in London,
immediately expresses and manifests a village/primitive mind set and also a
hoped for reliance on supposed 'pedigree' that has no purchase in an intensely
competitve urban setting. Here, by and large, achievement, character and "going
somewhere counts". It truly saddens me to see among my old school friends now
in London that, those who have achieved the least (educationally and
materially) end up seeking refuge in caste that they had never expressed before
and we had never heard about before from them.

Dear Cornel,
I assure you this dynamic that has occurred in London
and Toronto, has simultaneously occurred in Goa as
well. Catholic girls are well educated; in contrast
per cent of the male population drops out early to
pursue careers that earn hard cash. As a result our
qualified girls find it hard to meet prospective
grooms within the stifling divisions of caste.
