Gabe,
There is an old saying in the business world. "When you owe the bank a million
dollars you are in trouble. When you owe the bank 100 million dollars, the bank
is in trouble". Today, in the US you can add the line, when the banks are owed
$100 TRILLION dollars, the country is in trouble. Incredibly shortsighted
economic policies have resulted in their financial institutions being on the
verge of collapse. Citibank was forced to raise money by issuing a convertible
debt with a 11 percent coupon. 11%? Isn't that junk bond territory? And
now US politicians (Bush included) are jumping in with plans, using tax payers
money, to solve the problem. Have you ever heard of a politician solving a
financial crises? My money says that the politicians will only worsen the
crises. Gold is going to continue being an exceptional financial option going
forward.
The current Indian adm, to their credit, are encouraging the out flow of money
in an attempt to keep the Indian currency competitive. Restrictions on
exporting capital have been removed and even encouraged. Indian conglomerates
are soon going to be able to pick up western assets at fire sale prices.
Lastly, a western financial writer will always be targeting a western audience.
He will miss (intentionally or not) the efforts made by the Indian govt that
are actually working. If Singh gets another three to five years in power, he
will be able to propel India into the 21st Century. The GDP rates he has
already achieved are nothing short of spectacular.
