Hi Gabe
My sincere apologies if I misunderstood that it was in Nairobi (and not in
London) where you danced with Bamon girls. However, I may indeed be one up on
you as I actually dating Bamon girls in Mombasa. There was nothing unusual in
this at all as little Mombasa was not really riddled by caste compared to
Nairobi with its four (from recall) Goan clubs etc. However, I only discovered,
much later, from friends that, my dates were indeed Bamons!
I was even more surprised many years later in London that, when around 1976
or so I edited a totally revamped from 2 to a 48 page Goan Association
magazine then called the Newsletter, and introduced photographs and quality
articles in each edition prior to the advent of the computer and
word-processor, I discovered that several people among Goan Londoners simply
assumed that I must be Bamon to be able to generate so much innovatory quality
material! Some politely requested that I attend their (bamon) functions as a
guest but I kept well away from such caste based nonsense only preferring to
attend the all-embracing Goan Association functions. The exception was when I
played in a big dance band then, and effectively played at virtually every
London Goan village social/wedding etc as well as in neighbouring cities in the
UK. I thus got to know, rather well, about what went on within the UK Goan
social scene as well as in other ethnic communities. Such has been part of
the good life!
Regards
Cornel

................... As to Gabe, I have not had the time to reply but
rest assured that I believe Gabe is entirely wrong if he says that
'Catholic' Goan casteism is widespread in London. Indeed, another of
his posts says the exact opposite---after all he danced with some
Bamon girls! I will spell out my position as soon as possible.

RESPONSE: I danced with Bamon girls in the Bamon club in Nairobi
called Goan Gymkhana ! There was no place restricted to me.
