My Italian cobbler is a 'patrician' to locals, and a major domo in the Parish

consider this irony - I was a witness to Mahar women being told they couldn't

the Thames ! They would have turned you into a 'fitter' just fifty years ago,
with on the job schooling that really belonged in a classroom. Your science had
arrived, but the 'upper' class norm sent ninty five percent of kids in England
to guild and trade school at the age of twelve !
A hundred years ago, the Scotsmen at Greaves Cotton and Richardson Cruddas
churned out the 'fitters' who would go on to build that great city - Bombay.
They were drawn from the ranks of english literate Goans and Parsees. Only the
Parsee would use Fitter for a surname, however, and we are not surprised.

ps I was a slow learner, grabbing a cobra tail when i was two, mother
was hysterical, they say, but not avo, it too was 'amcho' to her, with it's
nest in our attic, and a mission to keep interlopers at bay.
