Thanks for the compliment but the very few non-white people who made it into
academia, when things were much tougher than now, were role models mainly to
the Asians and middle-class whites but not to the Afro-Caribbeans and
working-class whites who strongly resisted education and still do. The concept
"British" is a pretty complex one and is indeed continually changing with the
advent of every new migration---but the diversity is truly wonderful. I don't
think there is another comparable city in the world as diverse (with all the
benefits) as Greater London but do note that, the education across the nation
is superb for some but not for a wider lot than might have been expected.
