To Goanet -

January 1, 2008: Goa's Movement Against SEZs (GMAS) today
held a meeting in Panjim which was followed by a press
conference conducted by GMAS convener Matanhy Saldanha.

Some highlights:

- GMAS expressed strong apprehension about the "not in
present form" reference by the Chief Minister as regards
the SEZs, and demanded that SEZs in ALL forms (IT Parks,
IT Retreats, IT Resorts, IT Habitats, Food Parks, Townships)
be immediately scrapped.

- GMAS demanded that the land sold by the govt be
recovered, and that all ongoing land acquisitions be
immediately dropped.

- GMAS demanded an inquiry into the approvals of
SEZs in the first place, and investigation of those
responsible for pushing them through without proper
cabinet level approvals, and without considering the
views of he people of Goa.

- GMAS demanded that a white paper on SEZs be
made public.

- A delegation of GMAS will meet the Chief Minister
soon to seek clarifications and answers to questions
still unanswered, and more importantly, to seek clarity
on the specific steps and the definite time frame necessary
to put all the SEZs to rest.

- GMAS will put on hold public forms of protest for now,
but will continue its vigilance. Drawing upon the unpleasant
experience of the RP2011, GMAS does not want SEZs
to reappear in some other form or under another label.
GMAS will not allow SEZS entry into Goa through the
backdoor, sidedoor or through the window.

Regards,
