 Traditional Carnaval/intruz

I remember until mid 80s, how people used to enjoy traditional carnival.

There were folk plays almost in every village. Door to door group dancing or
singing with or without carnival masks. Cold water bath, talcum face powder
bath etc

Kunnbi Gaudi used to come door to door with their traditional kunnbi dance
group(Randonn).

Some village men/women used to wear hindu or Gaudi dresses etc. and that was
the spirit of intruz or carnival.

Now, every thing is changed.

I guess TV/Cable, Carnaval floats, changing lifestyle etc to blame.

I am for traditional carnival, and as such, I would like to suggest the
following for preserving traditional carnival:

-Govt. should organize Carnaval floats at two places only. E.g. North and the
south

Preferably Mapusa/Panjim and Margao. These floats should be fixed before
carnival dates e.g Fri in the North and Saturaday in the south leaving 3 clear
carnival days Sun-Mon-Tue for traditional carnival celebrations. Alternately,
Sat can be fixed in Margao and Sunday in the North (as carnival is more popular
in the South)

The above will have other advantages too like group/street dancing
teenagers/grown up would not have to be out to long (too late) on all 4 days
i.e. Panjim, Margao, Vasco, Mapusa etc. Once this was a major concern saying
‘No to Commercial Floats etc’
Where are all the NGOs or Saads?

It will also mean no traffic jam or interruptions etc

- Govt should organize/support traditional carnival at village level.

- Carnaval Khell (Folk Plays)

1.Preference should be give to those groups having traditional brass band e.g
drum, trumpet etc (now a days some do with electric organ etc).

2. Preference should be give to those group with non-professional tiatrists
(except those regulars folk play writers like MiniMario etc

Now a days, popular tiatrist like Prince Humbert, Anil-Olga etc also hired to
act on the floor and at big price. They did last year and this year too
advertisement seen in local Herald. Today there were about two page full of ads
(about 30 groups/inserts).

Carnival come early this year i.e. 2nd Feb (Sat).

If time permits you, pl watch these clips and photos of traditional Carnaval in
Goa.
