The number game begins…

PANJIM, JAN 16 — The new dispensation’s composition will become clear on
Thursday. They will also meet to decide on their leader who perhaps will stake
claim to be the next chief minister. Vishwajeet Rane is the front-runner to be
the new leader. Sources however do not rule out Opposition Leader Manohar
Parrikar coming in the picture to head the next government later.
The BJP apparently doesn’t want to join the government. Having burnt its
fingers last time, it wants to go slow though many of their MLAs want to be in
power. The BJP has 14 MLAs in the house of 40.
The new dispensation has at least eight members.
Babush who was one of the masterminds told Herald that Reginaldo Lourenco
(Curtorim MLA) is with them.
Sources also stated that two Congress MLAs might resign tomorrow to join the
new formation. The names figuring in the political circles were: Pale MLA
Gurudas Gauns and Shyam Satardekar (Quepem). While Gauns is close to
Vishwajeet, Shyam enjoys cordial relations with Mickky. In fact in July when
Shyam had allegedly joined the revolt initially, it was Mickky and his PA
Lyndon Monteiro who had got him back.
The coalition government which had 23 MLAs was tottering tonight as the number
game has changed drastically. With the sudden revolt, the Congress which has 16
MLAs has the support of only Churchill Alemao, SGF Supremo and Independent MLA
from Sanvordem Anil Salgaocar.

Opposition Leader demands dismissal of government

      BY HERALD REPORTER
PANJIM, JAN 16 – Amid reports of resignation by three Cabinet ministers,
leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar today demanded immediate dismissal of
Digambar Kamat-led government saying it has been reduced to a minority.
The BJP leader also demanded that the chief minister be asked to seek vote of
confidence and prove majority on the floor of the House on January 17, 2008.
In a letter to Governor SC Jamir, Parrikar claimed that the government had lost
majority as three ministers had resigned from the Cabinet and “several MLAs had
withdrawn support to the ministry.”
Earlier, addressing a press conference in his secretariat chamber, Parrikar
expressed shock on the way the House was adjourned soon after recess.
The House today was adjourned soon after recess with Chief Minister Digambar
Kamat requesting the Speaker to do so in view of the Central minister’s call to
immediately review the situation of the Pernem accident victims.
The reason given by the chief minister to adjourn the House was “flimsy” as he
wanted to avoid the voting over the Finance Bill, the BJP leader said.
The accident at Malpem had taken five hours ago and what was the need to
adjourn the House as it could have continued even if the chief minister was not
present, he said.
Parrikar also criticized the Speaker for giving consent to chief minister’s
request without any discussion.
He said the government does not have the courage to face the House as they know
they are in minority, he said.
Despite being in minority the government is continued at the behest of the
Governor and the Speaker, Parrikar charged.
He said that this is the second time such thing has happened as the same had
happened on July 26 last and even then the government was in crisis situation.
About BJP staking claim to form government, he replied “let the Governor sack
the CM first then we’ll decide our move.”
