Camotim is the Portuguese spelling of Kamat. My mama's
amigo in Lisboa, the elegant Preeti Kamat, officially spells
his name "Xencora Camotim" (Shankar Kamat). Similarly,
Kashinath in Portuguese is spelt Caxinata.
In the south, Kamat is spelled as Kamath. There the "th"
denotes the soft 't' - hence, Geetha for Geeta, Shantha for
Shanta etc - and 't' the hard 't.'
Warm regards,
