For a good, concise discussion on the people of Goa, refer
to the following set:
PEOPLE OF INDIA, Editor: K.S. Singh. One volume deals exclusively
with Goa and has collections of essays on the different communities
found here. Additionally, there is an Appendix at the end that
carries a very useful article by Dr. P.P. Shirodkar discussing the
etymology of the names of places, villages and towns in Goa.
There is a copy of the volume in the Rare Books section at Central
Library. My own copy is currently in Bangalore but will be here
in a week or so. I plan to scan and post the Appendix on Goanet
for reference (for which I have Dr Shirodkar's verbal approval).
>From what I recall, I concur with about 75% of Dr. Shirodkar's
etymologies.
