Thanks for clarifying Rajan. Obviously I'm not well
acquainted with how the caste association in Hindu
surnames works. When Catholic Goans link surnames with
caste, it is only with the intent to belittle someone
else or assert their own superiority. There are
ofcourse some surnames that link to communities,
places and historical perspectives, as Valmiki did
recently with part of my ancestry, providing me with a
snapshot even I was unaware of, but by and large
linking the surname to anything other than the
tail-end of a person's name seems superfluous.
