Fredrick Noronha writes: "Firstly, artists should have artistic freedom
(without it being decided upon by the mullahs -- whether they are Christian,
Hindu, Muslim, secular, atheist, agnostic or whatever)."

In which case it is necessary to do away with censor boards all over the world.
In which case why is the programme of the the Hindu Dharmajagruti Sabha sought
to be banned? And why did the Government of India seek to remove a video from
YouTube of a character depcited as Mahatma Gandhi doing a pole dance?

More importantly, does freedom come without any sense of responsibility? I
would like members on this list to remember, a fact that will not be part of
the mainstream discussion, that Husain's son objected to his father being
depicted in the nude by an art gallery in Chennai. This depiction was done in
retaliation to his depiction of Saraswati in nude.

I think it is said that your freedom to swing your arm stops where my nose
begns.

The issue is whether anyone can trample on the sentiments of others. Of course,
this trampling business is a subjective issue. But instead of using the
'artisitic freedom' argument, Fredrick should clearly say whether he thinks the
sentiments were hurt or not in this particular case. Others who use 'eminent
artist' argument should also answer this question.
