I sympathise with the police personnel who were injured in the stone throwing
incident at the Panjim police station. I write this letter for those injured to
know and realise, that the attitude of their own clan and department are
largely responsible for the pain they are suffering. It is like the Latin
Proverb : “Who lies with dogs shall rise up with fleas”.
I know of a family from the South of Goa whose four members of the family were
assaulted by around 40 people with granite stones in relation to a property
dispute, way back in 1974. That was the first time I had become aware that such
brutal attacks could take place in Goa. The incident reverberated in the
Assembly during Bandodkar’s period. Luckily for the family, there was no
fatality, but grievous injuries.
The police did their usual formalities, and on a counter- complaint arrested
all the four members of the family. They deliberately botched up the case by
not filing the grievous injuries report and let the accused walk scot-free. The
police at that time and even now have never protected victims of assaults but
have collaborated with the assaulters. They are seen by and large by the
public, not as protectors of Citizens and Law, but as opportunists for selfish
gains. Goa has seen proliferation of criminal activity among our Goans mainly
because it is easier to walk out free after committing a crime rather than
being a victim and seeking justice.
The injured police I would like to advise not to be surprised that you will be
remaining with your scars; but your assaulters will be roaming free in a few
days.
