The Opposition Councilors of Quepem Municipal Council today staged a morchea
on the Quepem Municipal Council over the issue of chairperson failure to lift
the Garbage from Quepem town and threatened if within 8 days the garbage is
not lifted they will dump the same in front of the Quepem Municipal Council.
Councillor Rahul Pereira, Caty Fernandes, Nana Gaonkar and Anthoneta Simoes
along with hundreds of villagers from Quepem took part in the marchea which
started from Quepem Fish market. When the Morchea reached near Quepem Municipal
Council the same was stopped by the the police team which was deputed near the
council.
The Chairperson and the Chief Officer then appeared before the agitators and
explained their respective stand on garbage. Explaining to the agitators the
stand taken by the council on Garbage, Chairperson Tereza Travasso stated
that to find a solution to the Garbage problem the council had taken a decision
but accused Chief officer Ajit Panchawadkar is not implementing the same.
She also accused the opposition Councilor of instigating the villagers to
oppose where the council tries to dump the garbage.
While denying the charges leveled against him the Chief Officer brought to
the notice of the agitating councilors and villager the different
correspondence made by him to different department regarding land acquisition
at Pedamol and stated that the council is yet to receive report from the
Forest department .
Council Rahul Pereira warned the Chairperson of taking the law in hand if the
garbage from the town is not lifted within 8 days while councilor Narayan
Gaonkar accused the chairperson of hijacking the garbage problem and not
finding any solution to the problem to secure her chair .
Councillor Caty Fernandes stated that she has asked the Chairperson to call a
meeting of the villagers of Pedamol along with the councilors to sort out the
issue which the Chairperson has not yet done. In the bargain there was exchange
of words between the Chairperson and the opposition councilors.
Meanwhile councilor Rahul Pereira accuse off there being a big scam in the
purchase of the garbage compactor purchased by the council about a year back ,
to which Chairperson stated that if she receives a written complaint to that
effect she will refer the matter to the vigilance department.
