Scarlett case: Suspended Goa forensic expert reinstated Thursday, 08 May , 2008, 23:34 Panaji: Goa government on Thursday reinstated suspended forensic expert Silvano Sapeco who had conducted the first autopsy on murdered British teenager Scarlett Eden Keeling which attributed her death to drowning in shallow beach water. "He (Sapeco) has been reinstated pending an inquiry," State Health Secretary Anand Prakash told PTI. Full coverage: Scarlett murder case Sapeco, attached to a state-run Goa Medical College and Hospital here, was suspended in March by the Health Ministry on the recommendation of the police for alleged "laxity". The expert had conducted the autopsy on Scarlett's on February 18, the day when her bruised body was found on Goa's popular Anjuna beach. Scarlett was left to die on the beach after being allegedly drugged and raped. The autopsy report had raised the question whether the death was a suicide or a homicide. Sapeco was accused of conniving with then Anjuna Police Sub inspector Nerlon Albuquerque, who was later sacked, to cover up the case. Police investigation led to the arrest of two locals, who were booked for drugging, raping and leaving Scarlett to die on the beach. Sapeco created flutter when he gave a second opinion on his autopsy report indicating that Scarlett's head was held under water for five minutes which caused her death. The forensic expert's revelation was in sharp contrast to police's findings, prompting the authorities to recommend action against him.
