There were five Goan men representing Tanzania in the 1980 Olympics. I know
sure that Mervyn Fernandes was on the Indian team that won that years gold
medal. So that makes at least six Goan men participating in an Olympic
tournament.
In the early sixties, there were several Kenyan Goans in both the Olympic field
hockey and track teams. If you add them to those in the Indian teams, I am sure
there would be more than six Goans at an Olympics. Also, in 1968, a Zanzibar
born Goan captained the Mexican field hockey team. He scored the first goal in
the Olympic tournament held there.
