Sterlite Industries of India, flagship company of the Vedanta Group, recently submitted the winning bid of $2.6 billion for ASARCO, the U.S. copper mining company formerly known as American Smelting and Refining. "We are delighted to have reached agreement on this important acquisition which is a significant milestone for our group", said Sterlite chairman Anil Agarwal. Sterlite is the largest copper producer in India. Sterlite is traded on the NYSE (SLT) and is trading today at around $20/share.

Sesa Goa now owned by the Vedanta group is owned by a character called Agarwal, who was once a trade union leader in Balco, a company which he eventually bought. Orissa govt. is investigating Vedanta for fraud. This man Agarwal is a big time dubious character.
