Tony, I read your postings with some interest having spent a great deal of my life in Africa like you, before moving on to the U.K., Europe, North America, and now Canada, heart of suburbia.
I lead an ordinary life, same 2 car household average...... I was sent briefly to Goa to study in my early teens. One of my classmates was a dirt-poor lad, who became an insurance clerk. One fine day he simply decided he was a 'builder'. Today, a few years later, he has completed at least two score 'projects' of increasingly deplorable quality - and owns about a dozen villas. apartments and shops all over North Goa. Outside his own palatial Arabian-night residence towering over the Arabian Sea, gleam over half a dozen huge, sleek, late-model automobiles. He doesn't know one end of a T-square from a slide-rule, but natters on condescendingly to me about his multi-crore projects with JV partners, when I visit him in Goa every few months. None of this could have been achieved without brazen graft. Of course the long-term danger to his unsuspecting clientele and the escalating damage to Goa's fragile eco-system are well-nigh incalculable. Goa's water table will vanish in under five years. Or am I merely being jealous? Best, Francis.
