In response to the questions I posted earlier, Roland Francis posted the following responses:
3. Agente Monteiro operated in Goa much before and a little after 1961. There probably would have been no connection with Bandodcar who became CM much after that. Unless he had a link, not so well known, as a mine-owner with him. Looks like that is where you are going. 4. Only very remotely. He operated for the Portuguese political administration, not for traders and business magnates. 6. ......even India (has) the RAW? 8. To do the dirty work that comes up against the path of national interest i.e. problems that the government would take a long time to solve or cannot solve legally and constitutionally. Dear Roland, Thanks for the response. It is true that every nation has many Agente Monteiros around. Are these "Agentes" patriots or are they people who do awful things to others? I personally believe that they probably are a mixture of the two. It is quite commonly known that Bandodkar was arrested by the Portuguese just before 1961. He is reported to have been released from jail through the intervention of a certain Agente Monteiro. Bandodkar is reported to have contributed a tidy sum towards the 'suppression of criminal elements in Portuguese Africa'. Am not sure as to the cause of his arrest - possibly the fact that he handed over some dynamite after a "Your dynamite or Your Life" incident with a future senior law enforcement officer of Goa. (Mine owners has access to dynamites) If Bandodkar (a smaller mine-owner) had access to Agente Monteiro - is it that inconceivable that others also had such access? Hey, business always sides with the one in power. jc
