Cinelerra (aka "so so") 2. Kino (DV Editor > MovieMaker) 3. Blender (sequence editor) Each has it idiosyncrasies.. Almost no video editing application I've ever used as been perfect, even of Windows.. There are way too many video codecs, way too many bugs, and no sure thing. Kino, is nice.. It is really designed to edit videos from a DV camcorder, and provides transitions like those found in Windows MovieMaker, but has parameters for fine tuning the transitions where MovieMaker lacks the ability to fine tune parameters. Blender has a potential to do high level compositing with its access to Z-buffer, alpha channels and custom codable and compileable sequencer plugins. With every version of blender, there comes c source to compile sequencer and procedural texture plugins. In this video I show how to compile these (in Ubuntu) and and how to access them via the sequencer editor.. Blender supports a multitude of video formats, and is a better choice if you want a non-destructive video editing compositing tool.. Also, 3D scenes can be loaded into blender's sequence editor as video clips too, so imagine using blender to create a 3D title, and sequence editor to render this over your video, creating professional style "news" graphics. Anyhow, Kino is the clear winner, with Blender second, and Cinelerra third.. http://youtube.com/watch?v=el7oEM91nRw FOOTNOTE: Goa's next free software/open source meeting is on June 24, 2008, 3-5 pm at the Science Centre, Miramar.
