The word is an 'apabransha' of the Sanskrit word "taranti,"
meaning boat.

Related Sanskrit words are "taraN" and "tAraN" (where "N"
denotes the hard 'n' which gets softened in Prakrit, and 'A'
denotes the long 'a').

En passant -
taraN (taran) is also another word for boat, and tAraN (tAran)
is the act of crossing (a river/ocean), often used as a
metaphor in Hindu spiritual traditions for the Lord's
deliverance.

The name of Goa's Tari community is a cognate of these
Sanskrit words.
