Hi Selma, hi people, A quick email from Narita airport. I am not sure about precise origins being located in other languages, but the word for sail in Portuguese is vela; for sailing its is navigatao (accent marks omitted); sailor is marinheiro, and for journey it is viagem, and for ship its navio.
When I get back I will look if I can search out / find the IE (Indo-European) roots but for now the following -- largely broad thoughts based on my feeble knowledge of a pretty fantastic language, Konknni: tar: to cross over, to fjord (perhaps a bit esoteric) tar/un: vessel tarvar: on the vessel, on a voyage, sailing v/otti: one who embarks, veta to, voita to tarvar voita to (one who sails) There are some mind boggling heavy Konknni hitters on on Goanet who are part of Gulf-Goans Btw, I will be in Japan until Sept 7. So none of my fancy dictionaries surrounding me, just me and my poor ole brain. Of course there is always babblefish. This gave me an idea. Perhaps if I live for another twenty years, I could become a philologist. God, I can make something of my life. Bye now all. Tomorrow I am looking forward to attending / seeing the Daimonji no Okuribi, so any Goans in Kyoto, etc., may reach me at 077 525 0024. I will be in and around Kyoto for the next few days before I head off to Tokyo (for calligraphy masterclasses and interacting with shodokas) and late up north -- Yamata (looking at Shugendo an old religion pre Shinto (Ko Shinto) No hassles, allow me to treat you. : ) : ) venantius Date: Thu, 14 Aug 2008 16:28:02 -0700 (PDT) > From: Carvalho <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Subject: [Goanet] Origin of word Tarvotti - help > > Can someone help me, perhaps Ven'u, who is good at these things. > > I'd like to know the actually meaning of the word tarvotti.
