My my! The man has stirred. Goa is saved! Phew. >Would a signature campaign >to declare this area a national heritage site through the >Archeological Survey of India work? This faith in the ability of the ASI is as touching as the faith in Goldman Sachs. As bad as the Govt of Goa is, I would rather that the heritage sites within Goa remain in the custody of our own twits than be transferred to the clueless and corrupt babus of ASI. Every site the ASI has touched, from the Taj Mahal on down, they have turned into a pile of dog doo-doo. But nowhere is the ASI vandalism more dramatic than in their 'restoration' of the Vittala temple in Hampi, the jewel in the Vijayanagara crown. Take a look at the two photographs below. Pretend it is one of those games for kids in Tinkle. Lets call it, "Spot the turds planted by ASI" contest - http://www.parrikar.org/images/samples/hampi-1.jpg These are the "musical pillars" (they produce musical tones when struck). If you missed them and the ASI turds cheek-by-jowl, here's a close-up - http://www.parrikar.org/images/samples/hampi-2.jpg In more civilized places, the perpetrators would have been garroted. What you saw, by the way, is no accident. This is the only aesthetic superpower-dreaming malls-admiring modern Indians know and are capable of. Regards, r
