MICKKY FORCED TO TAKE STAND ON ROMI KONKNNI
MARGAO: When Tourism Minister came on stage at the Ravindra Bhavan, on
September 7, he must have expected bouquets for an act of philanthropy he had
just performed. Instead, the minister had to sweat it out and virtually be
party to a voice-vote by the house in favour of Konkani in the Roman script
getting recognition in the Official Language Act. The occasion was Mario
Menezes' celebration of his 25th anniversary of works in tiatros at the
Ravindra Bhavan by playing his favourite tiatr "Hi Maim Konnachi". Pacheco
announced a purse of Rs.20,000 to be personally donated by him for Rioma
Menezes, Mario's daughter.
Wilson Mazarello, who was the compere at the event and who incidentally is also
the convenor for the Romi Lipi Action Forum, asked the crowd to take a
voice-vote if they are for the Roman script to get official recognition in the
Official Language Act.
The audience comprising almost 350 people stood up in support and also demanded
that Pacheco commit to the cause. [GT]
