Dear Friends, When cornered, Miguelbab has a propensity to (1) get personal, so when the opponent retaliates in kind the moderator will step in to cap the discussion and he could pretend to have come out unscathed; (2) create a diversion, bring in extraneous matters so that the discussion will move on to another track, and his skin will be saved; (3) beat around the bush, light small fires so that he makes good his escape through the resulting smokescreen. and he has generally succeeded.
I must apologize for the small error that occurred while typing: I typed GKA when I meant DKA. Yes. Fr Freddy was the President of the ad hoc Committee of DKA (and I doubt whether there was any ad hoc committee of GKA). But, whether DKA or GKA, how could this fact enable me to quote the correct date of the establishment of DKA? Could he please explain? I do not remember the dates nor did I claim to do so. I had clearly stated that I got the info from the very reverend whose sidekick he is, meaning Fr. Pratap Naik . So let him inquire and PLEASE report his findings. He may know a thousand-and-one things about a hundred-and-one persons which might have been the subject matter of litigations, tiatrs, movies or even riots. But they are immaterial to us here, unless they are relevant to the issue under discussion. Therefore, could he please tell us the relevance. Prof: How can I delete something which does not exist in the first place? He must show me one place where I have myself used the prefix Prof. before my name, before telling me to remove it. I DO NOT USE IT; you will not find it on my letterhead. But, whether I am entitled to use it is a different matter altogether. In fact, his memory seems to be very short indeed. Two years ago he was harping on the same matter, on goa-research-net. I had then given him, in a personal mail so as not to embarrass him, a long explanation with the request not to use that prefix before my name since he is allergic to it and I am not enamoured of it. But, instead of acceding to my request, he continued using it, albeit bereft of the inverted comas that he used earlier. His reason for this action was: if Bombay Unversity has used it, who am I to question? And he continued doing so until very recently when the inverted comas returned! But then, when he is apt to forget HIS OWN writings which are available in goanet archives, how can I expect him to remember what I wrote to him? Should I repeat that, in the public domain? If he lets me know, I shall do the needful. The GKA (yes GKA) orthography is for writing Konkani not English; ditto for the DKA orthography of 1988. The sound adopted for the letter X is the Portuguese one. He must be aware that Roman script letters do not maintain uniformity of sound in all the languages which use it. If you don't believe me, please ask an English-educated (but Portuguese-ignorant) person to read a Portuguese text. The result would be hilarious. The letter X has the English SH sound only in Portuguese and in no other. In English (try writing this as Englix!) it is KS in the final position (e.g. tax, box), GZ in medial (e.g. exam, oxen) and ZH in initial (e.g. Xavier, xerophyte). Therefore, in an English sentence, "Sondex" would be read as "SONDDEKS" in GKA / DKA orthographic equivalents. Hence I wrote "Sondesh" in English; perhaps "Sandesh" would have been more correct. For example, I write the name of my mothertongue as Konknni in a Konkani sentence but as Konkani when writing in English. Doubling the N does not result in the desired sound in English; in fact English does not possess this sound. For example, in the word Kannada (as used in English) the doubled N does not have the same sound as in our "Konknni". In GKA orthography the word is written as Kon'nodd, thus signifying that two soft N's follow one another in quick succession and the ending is a hard D. In English words the N sound is identical whether one or two N's are used (and the sound of D, whether single or double, is hard); but it does make a diffrence to the pronunciation of the preceding vowel. Compare the pronunciation of the two English words, "caning" and "canning." But some "learned doctors of philosophy" insist on writing "Konknni" even in English sentences. Similarly "Xri" would be read as "Zhri"; therefore "Shri" is the correct English form. As proof of Fr. Pratap Naik's piracy, I have already posted to Miguelbab a xerox of an interview of Prof. Lordino Rodrigues taken by Felicio Cardoso and also a xerox of the Preface to the Roman script edition of "Mohabharot" written by Fr. A. Noronha sfx in 1987. The interview appeared in Gulab in September 1990. Prof Lordino died in 1996 and Felicio in 2004. But not one of the several personages mentioned therein bothered to refute even one word in that interview. Many of the persons, but not all, are now dead. May be Fr. Pratap Naik will issue his denial after these too have gone into the hereafter. What further proof would he expect? Internet forums are not research journals nor are the messages research papers, to expect footnotes and references of quotations. But it would be a different matter if Dr. Pratap Naik were to deny having written those passages. Let Miguelbab investigate and PLEASE REPORT. Better still, let Fr. Naik himself do the denying. I shall then give them the references; I do not have to remember them; I own a copy of the volume that also contains a paper of mine which I had read at a seminar at Goa university wherein both Fr. Pratap and Fr. Matthew had participated. If "almost everyone linked to it rendered voluntary service and some people had invested their time and money" in Goencho Ulo, how is it that the tabloid "fortnightly" folded up within six months after bringing out just as many issues, and that too without saying goodbye? What happened to the grandiose projections of readership, of internal generation of funds on the lines of Margao Plus (which is also distributed free and going strong), Miguelbab's "fish v/s fishing rod" theory et caetera which took the gullible diaspora Goans for a ride? Did it fold up because " ….. we now have a number of magazines in Konkani ……"? Did these magazines come up during the lifetime of Goencho Ulo? Was this the stated objective of starting Goencho Ulo? Where was it stated? Or is this a flimsy excuse for failing to deliver as promised, in spite of having management gurus who now advise others on how to run a Konkani magazine professionally? How many such magazines have appeared since then and SURVIVED? Has the infant mortality rate changed for the better? I shall leave the rest of his message alone, since all those points have already been answered ad nauseam. Ultimately, Truth alone shall prevail!
