Regards, Marshall Thursday, October 02, 2008 20 more houses torched in Kandhamal Phulbani: Defying curfew clamped in highly sensitive areas of riot-hit Kandhamal, miscreants on Wednesday set afire 20 houses and a church in the district even as police arrested 40 people on charges of rioting and arson. The houses were set on fire at Bhanjamaha village in Raikia, nearly 80 km from here, this afternoon, police said adding none was arrested in connection with the incidents. All the miscreants escaped before the security force arrived at the spot, an eyewitness told reporters. Villagers claimed they had been threatened earlier by unidentified people that their houses would be attacked. A total 40 people, including some key tribal leaders and traders of G Udayagiri area, have been arrested since yesterday for their suspected involvement in the killing of a woman. Businessmen downed their shutters in protest against the arrests of the traders who are stated to be RSS activists. With this, the total number of arrests since the eruption of violence in the district after the killing of VHP leader Laxmananada Saraswati on August 23 increased to 325, official sources said. The new director general of police Manmohan Praharaj reached here this evening and reviewed the situation.
