Good article by Maria Aurora Couto.

There needs to be dialogue on this point rather than unilateral announcements.

1) Portugal is now a democracy. But have the wounds of the freedom-fighters
healed ? For instance, has Portugal apologized for his 450 year draconian
colonial rule or is it all as if nothing had happened ?

These issues need to be discussed point blank before holding all kinds of
celebrations.

2) I strongly object to the word "celebration" when it comes to 500 years
of Portuguese rule. At best, it can be a commemoration and reflection on
that sad event.

3) There may be a case for engaging with Portugal in the future but not before
the above issues have been resolved.

regards,
Samir
