'Know Goa prog to be held annually'

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Panaji: The NRI Commissionerate in Goa proposes to set up a Global Goans Forum after bringing together and consulting all Goan organisations outside Goa, whether in India or abroad. Addressing a press conference on Monday, the NRI commissioner Eduardo Faleiro also spoke about a "Know Goa" programme formulated by the NRI Commissionerate.

He said the Global Goans Forum will arrange regular activities for interaction with and among the Goan diaspora. The forum will play a vital role in research, data management and policy support, he said.

A preliminary meeting on this subject was already held in Goa recently where representatives of the Goan community in Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi and Kenya participated. "I have requested our ambassadors and high commissioners across the world to contact Goan organisations so that they may appoint their representatives here and we may finalise a plan of action towards constitution of the Global Goans Forum," Faleiro said.

Faleiro also announced that 12 youth of Goan origin who are nationals of foreign countries will be visiting Goa from November 30 to December 14 as part of the "Know Goa" programme formulated by the NRI Commissionerate. Faleiro said these youth are professionals or students who have distinguished themselves in a particular field.

This is the first "Know Goa" programme and it will be an annual feature. The first batch of youth who will visit Goa hail from the countries of Australia, Canada, Mozambique and the USA. The programme is being organised in collaboration with government and non-governmental agencies including the Nehru Yuvak Kendra.

During their stay in Goa, the participants will visit the Goa University, National Institute of Oceanography, Chowgule College, BITS Pilani and interact with students and staff. They will also attend the feast of St Francis Xavier, visit Pilar seminary, Mangueshi, Shantadurga and Chandreshwar temples, the Safa Masjid and meet religious leaders.

The youth will also go to villages and observe the making of village handicrafts, indigenous games and dances, witness a mock gram sabha and visit the South Goa zilla parishad office. They will also stop at other places of tourist and general interest in Goa, a press release said.
