Dear Tony,
First of al let me say that we must all appreciate those who are
trying to make an honest living by conning
the general public.

Forget those guys of yours who came up with very elaborate and I dare
say risky ruses to foo you. Many many
years ago I remember one guy who came to my place very piously, and
he did not speak a single word because he was supposed to be dumb. He
handed me a printed letter telling of some sob story that had happened
not very long ago - maybe it was an earthquake, maybe it was a cyclone
- the details don't really matter.

Anyway, when I saw the list of subscribers to his cause, many of whom
were my neighbours, I thought maybe he is genuine, and , and I
actually parted with some cash to him and worse still recorded my name
in his collection book..

A couple of days later I saw the guy selling oranges and apples at a
stall in the Mapuca fruit market. When I questioned him as to whether
or not he had come begging to my place, he claimed that I was mad, and
that - no I don't think this embarrassing episode requires further
elaboration. Later I learnt that there was a strike in the transport
business, so instead of staying unemployed this young man decided to
use his selling skills making a few bucks begging.Since that time I
have become wiser ... er...hopefully.

Actually of all the crooks in the world such con artists are the ones
I admire the most. They don't depend on crude methods like using
threats or violence to make their way up in the world, All they depend
on is the stupidity of you and me.

Cheers
Augusto

Today we were visited by a van load of individuals blaring music over
 a
public address system soliciting donations for the treatment of a child
 in
Ponda. Sometime back during the monsoons also, this was done with the

variant that tickets for a tiatr were being sold for a similar charity.
