We are very happy to know that there is a sudden groundswell of action
at the village level as claimed by GBA after it maintained a mysterious
silence for over 6 months on the police atrocities and builder abuses on
villagers demonstrating against mega projects. So immediate has been the
overnight grass root mobilisation of GBA that it is now holding a press
conference tomorrow at Holy Spirit church, Margao to demonstrate its
village power. It is very interesting that suddenly GBA has got
extensively concerned about mega projects and
...................................at this juncture of finalisation of
RP 2021. GBA also takes credit for making people aware of the 73rd and
74th Amendment that has really powered the village action. Despite 2
wickets down (convenor and Jt. Convenor South resigning hurt) GBA seems
to be moving faster than when it had its committee intact. Perhaps the
heavy weights having alighted from the GBA bandwagon its engine has
gained speed to the extent that after crawling for 2 years in the North
it has been encouraged to run in the south, perhaps with the tremendous
response from the villages as it claims. Only hope that the vehicle is
not running with a driver intoxicated on seeing the groundswell that he
will soon see it go over a cliff to ensure the funeral of the village
groups which have survived police beatings and goonda threats all these
months without GBA's sympathies and support. So from anarchists some
months ago the villagers have once again become democratic for GBA. So
good days seem to be back for Panchayati Raj and the Goan people after
the period of GBA recession. Goa's public memory is damn short and
people are quick to forgive sins of betrayal and commission? That is how
politicians get courage to go back to the people and get re-elected
again and again only to leave them orphaned for the rest of the five years.
