Report of GCCI Centenary Cup Finals(Table Tennis) held on 1st February 2008, at the Indoor Stadium in Campal-Panaji
There were plenty of thrills at the Finals of the GCCI Centenary Cup, a Talent Search Table Tennis Tournament organized by the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry in association with the Panjim Table Tennis Club and the Sports Authority of Goa, held at the Indoor Stadium in Campal on Sunday. Varun Devjani showed plenty of grit and determination as he came back from a 2 set deficit to defeat the highly talented Selvyn Godinho in a pulsating encounter in the Under 14 Boys Singles. In the Girls Under -14 duel, Leticia Pinto kept out the spirited challenge of Nisha Mhambre to clinch the title 14-12, 10-12, 11-9, 11-3. Jagdish Kaisare played an attacking game to overcome Varun Devjani 12-10, 11-3, 8-11, 11-9 to clinch the Under-12 Boys Singles title. In the girls Under 12, Rhea Alfonso emerged winner after she defeated Annalee Serrao 11/6, 7/11, 11/8, 11/9. In the Under- 10 Boys category, Nigel Menezes got the better of Shivang Paliwal 11/6, 11/7, 11/9 while in the Under 10 girls, Arantxa Noronha beat the young Abigail D' Cuna 11-2, 11-4 and 11-3. Promising Player Prizes were awarded to Joel Andrade, Tyrone D' Costs, Nesmon Rodrigues, Imamuddin Killer, Atharv Joshi, Abhishek Dalvi and Pranav Maganlal. Mr. Kirit Maganlal, while speaking on behalf of the GCCI during the Prize distribution, announced that the GCCI would now look at supporting similar sporting ventures in the future. GCCI President Nitin Kunkolienker was the chief guest and Commander Pinto the Special Guest. The Tournament was officiated by NIS Coach Irwin Cordo. Earlier, Chetan Kawlekar, President of the Panjim Table Tennis Club delivered the welcome address while State TT Player Ajit Ghantker proposed the vote of Thanks.
