Many of the kids in the slums, do go to school--mostly municipal schools, where English is sometimes the medium of instruction. One kid I'd met in Dharavi, goes to St Stanislaus School in Bandra. He's into dubbing for Bollywood, and dreams of being an IPS officer.

When watching Slumdog Millionaire, there was one thing a lot of people did
not understand. In the movie the kids who were from the slums became tour
guides and took white people around on tours. Everyone had the same
question, how did these kids know English. If they are from the slums how
can they pick up one of the most difficult languages in the world?
Well here is a video of a kid from the slums who also happens to be selling
peacock feathers and check out how many languages he knows.....

Good point, Savia. These kids are smart - just imagine what they have to deal
with on a daily basis, just to survive. The movie provided a glimpse of what
the monsoons must be like for them.

Given half a chance they can do as well as anyone else as my post on another real life
"slumdog" showed:

If you take a closer look at the slums in Bandra and Mahim these days you will see many with second stories now, some with sattelite dishes and TVs, some with refrigerators and PCs, using bootlegged electricity. I saw kids in Catholic school uniforms who live there.
