Recollection of dreams Salgaonkar's artwork is versatile and his series of paintings is mixed media on paper, where knife impressions in reds, blacks and yellows emerge in different forms of fish and underwater life. Kynkyny Art is presenting the solo show of Goan artist Rajesh Salgaonkar from March 16 to March 31 at Kynkyny Art.
Salgaonkar's artwork is versatile and his series of paintings is mixed media on paper, where knife impressions in reds, blacks and yellows emerge in different forms of fish and underwater life. However, pencil, charcoal and ink drawings are his forte, where he can express his creativity in intricate detail. He mostly works with the marine forms specifically of fish that is fused with other kinds of forms and shapes to arrive at a distorted imagery of 'completeness' or portraiture. Fish takes a central character for imagining distortion as it allows distortion due to its curvilinear and flexible structure as well as being source of fantasy to create his own metaphors. His work reveals a fantastical, illusory world inspired by what Goa is reminiscent of. The idyllic life amidst nature, folk tales and the creatures from sea get together into a composite single image. The language is detailed and realistic but the final image seems like a recollection of dreams. Though he works on canvas also, he seems to be proficient in the medium of ink, watercolours and charcoal. He makes very detailed textures with crosshatches and other shading techniques and displays competent skills at line drawing. Mostly working with black and grey, he uses a hint of bold red or crimson to add drama to his complex drawings. Kynkyny Art is located at 104 Embassy Square, above Ganjam Jewellers, 148 Infantry Road. http://www.deccanherald.com/Content/Mar142009/metrosat20090313123850.asp ~(^^)~ Avelino
