I believe that Petromax was a company that makes these kerosene lanterns.
I remember having read the name on one of those lanterns, that we had in the
village.
The variation of Pettrumas is the typical Goan variation of
'Chockopser' for Shock absorber,
'Keelinder' for Cleaner or
'Pulumber' for Plumber!
In our village of Verem/Reis Magos too, there was a shop belonging to one
"Aluappa"
and he was much in demand to not only fix these "Pettrumas" but also to provide
his
Kerosene lamps for all the village functions like 'Natak', tiatr or any late
night functions.
I just googled for Petromax, and got this website:

and it appears that they still make those in Germany.
