Dear Joe,
Reading about "Fozznem" (see below) it looks like you've got the balls
rolling, (I mean the cannon balls) which open up many questions which would
show us
Goans to be rather not too savvy with our Goan (Christian, Hindu and Moslem)
culture. Why I say this? Let's see the Christian side first....
Can anyone explain why we have this Gon'nall (almost cannon-loud booms)
during
our Salves and Vespers, from which we get proverbs like "Filluchea kusthar
Fozznem"
or "Fest korta Ganv, Pirjentichem Nanv"? Tip: Has it anything to do with our
colonial past?
And talking of Festas could anyone explain why we call it the Feast of
St.Francis Xavier when actually it's the day of his death? We don't have the
same
appellation for Good Friday, the day of Christ's death, do we? Tip. Has it
anything
to do with our Hindu past?
Which in turn takes us into the Church of Bom Jesus itself, (it's like
panning
of your camera, Joe) to ask: whose statue do we see in the main altar? ( only
one
guess, please)
And while tarrying on the sacrosanct and historic grounds of Old Goa
please
allow me to ask just three more questions which occupy my mind: What
significance
has the Feast of St. Catherine for us Goans (25th November) and which St
Catherine
are we referring to (there are several St Cathrines) here?
Two. Did that epic Portuguese writer Luis de Camoes (Os Lusiadas) live in
Goa
along with his friend Garcia de Orta (medico) and who was this Goan girl he
(Camoes)
loved called "Barbara" who had captured his heart ("aquela cativa que me tem
cativo")? Was she his concubine or did they live in connubial harmony? You can
take
as many shots as you like here.
Finally. A simple question, is there a Church of SFX in Portugal?
Of course these are heritage questions pertaining to our (Christian,
Hindu,
Moslem) historical links and has per se nothing to do with present day
Portugal. We
also have our historical links to Hindu and Muslim India, where I have
collected and
collated in a set of questions and answers for my book "Tun Sang Maca" which I
intend to get going sometime after I get clearance from the Govts & religious
authorities concerned and after hearing more from your dear readers about some
of
the question that will interest us all as Christians, Hindus and Moslems.. I
don't
wish my people to call me a "Gon'nall" if you know what that means.
All in good fun. Kind regards.
P.S. This is no promo for my book.It wants to do with the pen what you're
doing with your camera.

So what is Fozne?
Usually, there is no feast in Goa without FOZNE
