GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994)
Independents fail to find favour in polls
Two independents in the fray in North Goa and six in south Goa fared poorly and
lost their deposits as they failed to curry favour with the
electorate as in the past Parliamentary elections.
Two lone female candidates in each of the two constituencies, Martha D'Souza in
Panaji and Smita Praveeen Salunkhe in Mormugao segments were among independents
who failed to cross the 4,000-vote mark.
In North Goa, Martha D'Souza, polled the highest among independents in both
constituencies 3,219 votes while the other independent Narcinva Surya
Salgaonkar polled 1,529 votes.
In South Goa, Hamzaz Khan polled the highest, 2,536 votes while Mulla Salim
mustered 1,771 and Jawahar Dias 706, Derrick Dias 679 and Francis Antonio
Fernandes 547.
In the past, it was only Roque Redualdo Antonio da Costa, an independent who
contested the Mormugao seat in 1971 and bagged 44,156 votes in South Goa, who
nearly upset Erasmo de Jesus Jack Sequeira. The UGDP nominee who garnered
58,401 votes, was the only party candidate among five independents then.
Among other independents who had fared well but failed to make the mark in 1971
in Mormugao were Monju Balkrishna Naik Gaonkar who polled 8,833 votes which
remains one of best performance by an independent.
