I didn't want to raise a debate on the above. Yes, I agree that the
governmet should screen 'migrant' workers. But, if these workers do not come
to work, where do we find, plumbers, carpenters, masons, etc.
I live on the banks of the Mandovi River, maintenance of my place is high,
because of humidity, corrosion, etc. The contractor who did work in our
small building (4 flats) is a Goan, but the workers were Oriyas. Very
polite. I needed some small carpentery work done at my place, went to 'Lobo
Carpentery shop' (old man died and he leased the place), the young
carpenters were Bengalies. Did some excellant work, very very polite. I
regularly buy my cashewnuts from a shop on 18th June Road, the owners,
Rajasthanies, my fruitwala is from Karnatka, and my vegetable man is from
Rajasthan. All these people are very kind and polite. Can I say that of
Goans. a goan woman came to me, saying she had nojob, so I needed an extra
pair of hands to do certain chores as my regular maid has no time. She
worked off and on for a week. She wanted a full timejob. Sent her to two
places, promised them she would join and never turned up. My newspaper guy
has a shop which his father used to run, v ery efficient and polite Goan,
his brother couldn't get a 'government job' so opened a similar 'gaddo' type
of place in Betim.
Blame our builders for employing the migrant labourers.
If it weren't for 'outsiders' who buy our heritage/ancestral homes and
maintain them beautifully, they would go to seed. Rich goans in the US,
England, Australia, etc. do they want to come back to Goa, NO. In
Saligao, aldona, Arpora, Assagao, lots of 'outsiders' have bought old
houses, restored them and are happily living in them.
Dont Goans go to the Gulf, England, etc. of v arious classes, buy houses and
live there, so why are we against migrant people.
