Dears Leroy Veloso from my village very kindly gifted me a copy of the 'Villagers of Moira Toronto Silver Jubilee 1971 - 1996 Souvenir'.
Although published in 1996 it is not at all outdated. ItThe Editorial Board was comprised of Millie Correa, Marion Dias, Ashley D'Silva, Jennifer Fonseca. Frances Fe Souza. Francis Lobo, John Nazareth, Paul Nazareth and the photographs by James & Michelle Lobo, and Valente Lobo. It is a very good example of what a Souvenir should be. It contains a Papal blessing; Letters of Congratulations; a historical sketch of Moira by Dr Teotonio De Souza; an article about the Wise Fools of Moira; a Letter from Nazar De Silva, a prominent citizen from Moira; an article by a then 11 - year old Liza Rodrigues; Profiles of 45 prominent Christian Moidekars like Peter Nazareth, Dr Lorna D'Silva, Urban Lobo, Charles Correa, Dr Vincent De Sa and so on [They missed out on Dr. Jack Sequiera though.] and a lot of other Moira related stuff; Why do I praise this Souvenir? Well, Souvenir means 'that which serves as a reminder; a remembrance; a memento; a keepsake.' In Goa too many people assume that the purpose of publishing a Souvenir is simply to make money. So they fill 97 % of the Souvenirs they publish with advertisements. The articles in there are so few that one throws out the "Souvenir" the very day one receives it. The objective of publishing a Souvenir is thus defeated. If one's aim is solely to make money, then why feed the printer and go through all the headache of collecting ads and articles, proof-reading them etc etc etc ??? Would it not be a better idea to just collect the money in the form of donations?
