Allans, the music shop here sells the most expensive cymbals @AUD824.25 for a
pair of "Zildjian A Classic Medium Light Orchestral Selection Cymbals 18
inch". These cymbals are those large brass plates that orchestras and brass
bands sometimes use to good effect, compared to the ones used by pop bands
(where they are normally known as hi hats). That cost works out to be roughly
Rs 31,000 for the pair.
I understand the Western Classical wing of Kala Academy, Goa, badly requires
replacement stands, tympani (I have been told the skins have rotted away -
modern ones now have synthetic "skins" and I'd advise going in for the
pedal-operated chromatic versions which all modern orchestras now use) and good
wind intruments, like the oboe, which are usually unaffordable by students even
in the western world (a good quality oboe can cost upwards of AUD2,000). I do
hope the KA gives due interest to this side of music as well ...
Curious to notice there are no quantities given. Assuming the amounts are for
single units (or a pair if the instruments come in pairs), and considering the
instruments mentioned below are of Indian origin, Albino of Pedro Fernandes e
Cia might have a better idea of the real local prices. If there is a large
difference in the unit prices at Pedro's and the costs below, it may be due to
having inflated a few pockets here and there, maybe?
