2. We are moving towards globalization and with the internet (the arena for
Goanet's dhirios, ;-)) the world is shrinking even more. What we need is a
world unifying universal language and English fits the bill admirably.

Mario asks:

Hasn't English, or rather "American", become the de facto universal language 
already, even for those who obsess about THEIR "bhas" being a part of THEIR 
"identity", which is most of India?

If you think "English" is the universal language and not "American", just 
listen more closely to which language and accent is used in their singing by 
the world's singers, including the Brits.
