The Supreme Court of India the highest legal court of the Country cares a bleep about bhas. In its land mark judgment advised the Karnataka Government not to impose Kannada on students of Karnataka. So much for Bhas! bah! 2. We are moving towards globalization and with the internet (the arena for Goanet's dhirios, ;-)) the world is shrinking even more. What we need is a world unifying universal language and English fits the bill admirably. 3. Studies in South Africa where students study both in Afrikaans and English have proved that the students are not put to undue strain by studying in a dual medium school. 4. Let us look beyond our noses and keep the emotion aside. Let us look at the ground reality. One of the reasons why India is selected as an outsourcing destination of choice has to do with the fluency and facility that many Indians have with the English Language. Those who cite Germany, Russia, Japan as countries which carry out primary education in their mother tongues overlook the fact that in the countries cited, their educational, industrial and academic resources are such that for a vast proportion of the populace, no language other than the mother tongue is necessary in their lives. Can the protagonists of the vernacular mediums boast of the same? 5. Here is a simple test. The text books of std v are written with the presumption that the students have the necessary previous knowledge. What proportion of the students of std v can read their texts intelligently (i.e. with meaning and understanding?) Most students in Goa will flunk the test. Isn't this a reason why the tuition industry flourishes? 6. Let us not make the children guinea pigs. If Konkani medium is a must for primary school, then put a ban on all English medium primary schools. This includes the one being run by the Diocesan Society of Education. Let us not have hippocracy and duality. Sauce for the goose must not only suit the gander but must be seen to be so. Let all the bigwigs who sent their kids to English medium primary schools apologize to the people of the state and let us begin with those who are clamouring for 'maim bhas for the aam addmi' first of all................You can fill in the names. -- тσиу Tony de Sa Ph: +91 832 2470 148 M: +91 9975162897 E: [email protected] ------------------------------------------------ Ubuntu for Humanity!
