It is a $ 64,000 question posed by Selma on Goan Voice London. There was this Goan gentleman widower in his early 80s and comfortably settled down in Canada who had the urge to visit his homeland for the last time.He could not travel alone so he asked his favourite grandson who had just finished college studies to accompany him to India/Goa for 2 weeks holiday. On landing in Goa they checked in a luxury hotel along the seashore. On the 3rd day they hired a taxi and went to their native village. Apparently their a ncestral home was in a dilapidated condition.Met the old neighbours whom he could remember and had a short chit chat. On their way back to hotel the old man asked ''Baba now that you have seen our roots how do you feel about it ? Baba simply said ''Ugh! '' Towards the end of their holiday, they flew to Mumbai to spend a couple of days therre. Took his grandson to one room tenement on the second floor of a building in Dhobitalao where he spent his youth. His father ( boy's great grandfather) used to work as tallyclerk in Bombay Harbour and he was educated in St Xavier's School near by. As they came down the wooden staircase he wanted some sort of reaction from his grandson who said: Grampa ! I cannot imagine how you could have lived in this rathole !
