"We are being subjected to criticism for what we are doing in the House"
said the Honourable Aldona MLA during the discussion in the Assembly when
MLAs voiced their intense anger against the media and concerned citizens who
express diverse opinions on the Assembly proceedings. Did he in fact mean
that whilst the media and concerned citizens are ordinary human beings prone
to error, our Honourable MLAs are divine and infallible?
If the speaker carries out his barely veiled threat of imprisoning citizens
who express their honest opinions which may run contrary to the views of
the MLAs in the media, then there are many Goans, including myself who would
gladly accompany these dissenting voices into jail, to protect and preserve
our highly valued democratic birthright of freedom of expression. They can
confine the body, but cannot imprison or suppress our free spirit. This has
been tried by a previous government and we all know its fate.
Whilst it is certainly not my intention to be critical of Speaker Pratapsing
Rane, who said "Under the guise of independence, no one can have licentious
freedom", I am compelled to point out that according to the Oxford
dictionary, licentious means "immoral in sexual relations".
