We once were Soviet fellow-travellers, our 'tryst with destiny' in the firm
grip of the Congress party's lunatic Marxist fringe : all acolytes of British
Communist member of parliament, Cambridge based lawyer,Saklatwalla. They
incuded Javahar, Menon, Feroze Gandhi, Joaqqim Alva, and Malviya. We were at
the forefront of the world's largest Commie front organization, the Nonaligned
Movement, a group Lee Kuan Yew had called a Russian brothel. As their nations
floundered, the cliques toasted PM Khruschav in their tattered cities : Havana,
Cairo, Belgrade, Jakarta, and our country. The West was shocked when we
cynically watched the 'rape of Hungary' in cold silence.
Yet, all was forgiven when China invaded and Nehru dialled WASHINGTON, where
a government of three Kennedy brothers lost little time in diapatching the
Seventh Fleet to Calcutta. Fifty carrier bombers landed at Bagdogra, along
with scores of C-140 freight flights from Thai SEATO bases. It was they who
kept Mao out of our oilfields, not Menon's 1910 Enfields. An added bonus :
their boys overran the bar at Firpos, on Park St., and our gals wafted away to
Paradise.
John launched the USAID push into India that threw billions into an economy
that was bled by Soviet-style, State-sponsored plunder ; A brave
editor, Karaka, wrote 'they skimmed the cream even as they wallowed in our
ashes.' Later, Lyndon Johnson would send us fifty million tons of wheat on
three hundred Liberty Ships, to tide us over the 1965 famine.
The obituary offered by a local would be political leader was nothing short
of disgusting. Heres hoping he garners more than a hundred votes in
his next serial attempt at a seat in the Assembly. eric.
