We once were Soviet fellow-travellers, our 'tryst with destiny' in the firm
grip of the Congress party's lunatic Marxist fringe : all acolytes of British

with scores of C-140 freight flights from Thai SEATO bases. It was they who
kept Mao out of our oilfields, not Menon's 1910 Enfields. An added bonus :
their boys overran the bar at Firpos, on Park St., and our gals wafted away to
Paradise.
John launched the USAID push into India that threw billions into an economy
that was bled by Soviet-style, State-sponsored plunder ; A brave
editor, Karaka, wrote 'they skimmed the cream even as they wallowed in our
ashes.' Later, Lyndon Johnson would send us fifty million tons of wheat on
three hundred Liberty Ships, to tide us over the 1965 famine.
